The affair is a military wedding. The groom's parents are the Bradwins, one of the oldest and most distinguished families in Virginia. The family head, General "Boss" Bradwin, is a famous army officer. Of all his prized sons, his youngest, "Clipper" Bradwin, is the most promising. First in his class at Blue Ridge Military Academy, graduate with all honors, he is now entering into holy matrimony and then into wartime service of his country. What will begin, however, with the solemnity of his marriage vows will end in the echoing screams of the damned-an ungodly spectacle of spilled blood and sobbing, throat-aching terror. For this distinguished family is like no other on earth. There is a curse on their blood. Their family history is rooted not in magnolia and honeysuckle, but in darkness and demonism, in frightening forces beyond their knowledge and control. Their august history begins not in antebellum mansions, but with supernatural sorcery in the ancient rites and rituals of dark African jungles. There is a curse that grips the Bradwins from generation to generation, from horror to bloody horror, and that climaxes in a spine-chilling nightmare of black occultism and blood vengeance.
PRAISE FOR ALL HEADS TURN WHEN THE HUNT GOES BY
"No frills All Heads Turn When the Hunt Goes By is a unique horror novel; the strongest single work yet produced by the field's most powerful individual voice." - David Schow - Author of The Shaft, Seeing Red & Black Leather Required
All Heads Turn When the Hunt Goes By eBook John Farris
I read this book with my horror group at Shelfari. This book is widely considered a classic by many hard-core horror fans. It features African voodoo, slavery, southern plantations, snakes, curses and a unique cast of characters. It is well written and the story is beautifully told. I recommend the STORY highly for any fan of old-school horror.
However, the formatting problems in this book seriously interfered with my enjoyment of the story. There were commas and periods out of place, character names being misspelled or changed throughout the story, and weird issues like the word HALL being misprinted as HAIL throughout the entire book.
I am interested in reading more works by Mr. Farris, but at this point I may seek them out in paper form at the library because I fear another ordeal of being tossed out of the story by improper punctuation, misspelled words, question marks appearing out of nowhere, etc. I have reported these issues via the link below.
Again, I highly recommend this story-for its beautiful prose and fascinating subject matter. However, I suggest you seek it out in paper form until the publisher corrects these formatting issues.

All Heads Turn When the Hunt Goes By eBook John Farris Reviews
Order arrived quickly, safely and as advertised. Highly satisfied.
Starts out with a bang but loses some focus throughout the story. Overall good read though.
Better than I remember it from 20 years ago! Old, dark African lore, voodoo, snakes and an unusual cast of characters brought to life.
I found it a bit hard to get through. All the surprises seemed unsurprising because it was all led up to in such a slow fashion. Wouldn’t recommend.
I'm reviewing the centipede press edition - the special edition is a home run with excellent original artwork beautiful printing and artwork from earlier editions. The book is entertaining and has some far out elements that aren't over used which heighten the effect. The author writes very well.
Fresh combination of elements. Modern, southern military academy, with its rigid tradition and ritual, comes up against elder forces, brought to bear by those who have suffered its abuses back through generations. Satisfying, brutal revenge.
I read this book as part of a study for the horror group I am in over on Shelfari. I must admit, at first I was sort of not interested and if not for letting down my group, I probably would have not finished reading it. But I am so glad I finished reading this story. It is a good story, set at an interesting time in Southern Culture around the beginning of WW II. The character developement was good. Many of the characters were stong when first introduced, so waiting for what might happen with those characters was enjoyable for me.
The story starts off in Virginia (I think) at a wedding that doesn't go so well. Then some other stuff happens..lol..then off to England and one of my favorite locations AFRICA!! There is even mention of Sir Henry Rider Haggard's novels and of the man himself!!! Haggard has to be the most overlooked of all the classic writters, so I was happy to see him mentioned. The Ajimba reappear...weren't they in some of Haggard's books. Actually this style writing sort of put me in mind of a Haggard work. I wonder if this author has read Haggard's works and could recommend one of his better horror books for our group to read.
If you do pick up this book, stick with it. You'll be glad you did!! Yes, there were formatting issues and at times that was confusing. I don't think I ever got on the wrong track because of the formatting, but it should be corrected. I realize this is not the fault of the author.
One thing I never figured out. What the name of the book meant??? If anyone knows or has a guess, please comment back to me. I gave this book a 4.0
