This book presents the original proposal for the Convair Class VF Convoy Fighter of 1950, which led to the XFY-1 Pogo turboprop tailsitter naval aircraft. It was one of five submissions to the US Navy's Convoy Fighter competition, which called for a single-seat high performance fighter designed to protect convoy vessels from attack by enemy aircraft, and for vertical unassisted takeoff from, and landings on, small platform areas afloat or ashore. Every detail of the proposal is covered, including armament variations, landing gear alternatives, and an unbuilt small scale technology demonstrator. While the XFY-1 retained the original configuration of the proposal, nearly every contour was subtly changed during the type's evolution. As a bonus, a pair of Convair design studies for a vertical takeoff observation and reconnaissance tailsitter aircraft submitted to the US Army in 1955 are also included. This book features 43 images, including rare photos, detailed blueprints, contemporary illustrations, and beautiful color profiles. This is the fourth in a series of monographs covering the Navy's Convoy Fighter competition of 1950; previous volumes on the Goodyear, Martin and Northrop designs are still available from booksellers worldwide.

This 8.5"x11" 40 page booklet is filled with not previously seen drawings and text describing the project from inception in 1950 through it ultimate cancellation in 1955. This volume is of particular interest to historians and modelers alike since it contains sections on its design, intended purpose, testing and performance and also includes a plethora of schematics which includes interior design details that are especially appealing to aeronautical engineering enthusiasts as well as modelers. The booklet is adorned with several color profile drawings. It certainly does fill in a heretofore void in many aviation enthusiasts library.Product details

Convair Class VF Convoy Fighter The Original Proposal for the XFY1 Pogo eBook Jared Zichek Reviews
Interesting, if somewhat superficial review of the XFY-1 project.
PROS - good information about how BuAer set up the Convoy Fighter project
Blueprints/drawings are not usable on a PC... Reader was unable to zoom the picture size, making them useless on the PC, but zoom worked well on iPad - Could be a problem, but the drawings were so tiny as to be utterly unreadable.
Interesting add on for the Army and Gamby proposals
CONS - information repeated too often (e.g.; Convair's decision to forego a .766 scale prototype and the use of the YT-40 engine didn't need multiple repeats)
Very little information on the behind the scenes engineering problems that must have been encountered/solved -
Overall this is mostly superficial treatment of an interesting airplane - very little new or ground breaking info.
Already knowing a fair amount about the Pogo airplanes, there was a small amount of new information. For someone unfamiliar with the project, will be more useful.
Another Gem by Jared....hope to see more, somewhat odd subjects by him !!!
Excellent (If brief.) monograph on the design history of the XFY-1, its predecessors and proposed derivatives. Typical of this series the author has included a fair amount of brochure art from the original proposals to the perspective customers.
There are a few gems in the booklet including the earliest mention of a RAST style recovery system that I have ever seen and a discussion of a T56 derivative for the US Army.
(I suspect the T56 installation would have been rejected by the customer as it probably didn't exist and both the T38 and T40 both had contra-gearbox problems. And if the contra-box had been initially been designed, I suspect it would have been dusted off for the -427 rather than deal with the P-factor on the catapult.)
I can't speak to the kindle edition, but the drawings and illustrations are adequate with sufficient technical detail to provide a fair idea of the layout of the aircraft and its systems. The amount of text is minimal but the writing and analysis is excellent. An unexpected little treasure in here is a brief one page description of an earlier conceptual predecessor submitted to the War Department by an unknown designer.
Highly Recommended.
