I must tell you that I was delighted to see this book offered on Kindle. My copy, the one I have owned for years, was published in 1890 and while it is in excellent shape, great care must be taken when it is read in order to keep it that way.

This Kindle edition is well formatted and meets my needs perfectly.

I am not overly fond of Bryant’s works that deal with death and dying...his darker side I like to call it, but I love his poems dealing with nature and some of his more upbeat observations of life. I love the way he describes the changing of the seasons.

On the other hand, I don’t suppose I will get the full reading “sensation” I get via my Kindle that I get from holding my old, old copy....I am sort of funny about that I suppose. Of interest; I suppose, in the old book I own there is a lock of hair...it looks like the hair from a young child along with a short clipping by Horace Greeley stuck in the pages of the poem, “The Damsel of Peru.” Got to wonder.....Doubt if that sort of thing will ever be found on a Kindle or other reading machine.

Even though I am a real fan of William Cullen Bryant's poems -- to me, Thanatopsis rates as possibly the best -- this edition was a real disappointment. The poems run together with no clear breaks or structure. If you are looking for a particular poem, you have no choice but to scroll through page after page, looking carefully until you find what you are looking for.
Very inspiring and thought provoking.
Poetry of early America about nature.
A lovely collection of poems by one of my favorite poets! A great addition to my poetry collection. You simply cannot go wrong with a book of poetry by William Bryant. Not to mention that reading and studying poetry is a wonderful intellectual activity for a rainy day (or sunny day, for that matter).
The poetry of Bryant is full of beautiful descriptions of nature and life. His life in Massachusetts and then is New York is typical of the struggle of an artist to make a living and at the same time to pursue the beauty of the art of poetry. Some poems may deal at length will death and dying but he shows death as a transition to a new life. Great insights!!
I bought the hardcover copy. I am returning it. It is a photocopy of an older printing printed on cheap paper and bound with low quality hard covers. If you cherish real books, do NOT buy this edition. I will look on Abe books for a real book.
William Cullen Bryant is my favorite American Poet. My two favorite poems are To A Waterfowl and Thanatopsis. Thanatopsis is considered to be the first great poem written in America. He was a teenager when he started it. If you are a lover of good poetry then you must get this. When a particular poem comes to mind and I cannot remember a line it is really nice to be able to access it instantly and remember what I forgot! it was a great find!
